About Suzanne Hennegrave

Suzanne Hennegrave is a contemporary painter and art educator. She paints in oils and mixed-media, from memory and experience, and her work is developed using artistic intuition. She often paints landscapes and is inspired by the land, sea and big skies.  Her greatest loves are atmospheric weather and fleeting light and this she tries to capture in her work, through her own emotional response.  Much of her inspiration comes from the beauty of her surroundings, living in the South Downs National Park.

She likes to travel and also creates art which is an emotional response to the walls in the Souks of Morocco. Walls like reason create divisions and distinctions from moving freely. By erecting walls, we expose ourselves, our secret fears, and anxieties.  Walls are a provocation and a blessing due to the philosophical and cross-cultural conversation that takes place between those who built them and those who want to tear them down. The worn surfaces of the walls and the mandala motifs in her paintings invite you to meditate and find fragments of such discourse in the layers of life revealed.

Having painted landscapes for many years she has felt moved to create a series of oil-painted portraits that reflect on our vulnerability, and the unseen experiences we carry. The figures and faces are deliberately glitched and fragmented, creating a visual language for sensory overload, and the pressures of an increasingly fast-moving world.

 

The distortion is not intended to obscure the individual, but to reveal what can exist beneath the surface—the moments when thoughts, emotions, and external pressures become overwhelming.

 

The paintings are an invitation to pause, listen, and empathise. They aim to create awareness of our inner landscape reminding us that our feelings are valid and that we are not alone.

 

They seek to make the invisible visible, and the unheard feel heard.
